Why WhatsApp is a product surface, not a notification pipe
In India and much of MENA, customers already live in WhatsApp. Order updates, support, and even catalog browsing feel native there in a way email never will.
That only works if you respect the 24-hour customer-care window, use approved templates for outbound, and keep opt-in records. Treating WhatsApp like a cheap SMS blast is how numbers get restricted.
Cloud API building blocks
Meta’s Cloud API is the default integration in 2024: a WABA, a phone number, a webhook, and templates submitted for review. You will also need a way to map WhatsApp users to customers in your CRM or store.
Session messages (free-form inside the window) handle support. Utility and marketing templates handle shipping updates and campaigns — with different quality scoring and pricing.
- Collect opt-in on checkout, WhatsApp click-to-chat, or a web form.
- Store message IDs so you can show delivery and read state in your admin.
- Design templates with variables, not one-off copy pasted into the API.
Commerce patterns that work
The reliable flows are order tracking, abandoned-cart reminders (where policy allows), appointment reminders, and an AI or human handoff for “where is my order?”
Catalog and payment integrations exist, but the conversion win is usually faster answers, not turning WhatsApp into a full storefront on day one.
Architecture we ship
A thin webhook service, an idempotent event log, a connection to Shopify or your OMS, and an agent or bot that can escalate to a human with the full thread. Rate limits and template rejection are operational concerns — plan for them.
